It didn't long for Dodgers suspended slugger Manny Ramirez to make his presence felt during his first game with the Class-A Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday.
It took just two pitches.
After he was greeted with mainly cheers (although mixed with a few audible boos) from the fans at Lake Elsinore Diamond, Ramirez homered over the left-field fence off Nick Schmidt, the San Diego Padres' 2007 first-round Draft selection.
The homer also doubled as Ramirez's first hit in his Minor League assignment; he had gone 0-for-3 with a walk in his previous four at-bats over two games with Triple-A Albuquerque.
His next time up in the third inning, Ramirez's bat never left his shoulder. Schmidt didn't seem to want to give Ramirez the opportunity for another bomb, nibbling around the corners throughout the at-bat before issuing a walk.
Ramirez then advanced to third on a deep double to center field and scored later in the inning for his second run of the game.
In the fifth, Ramirez recorded his second hit of the game off Schmidt. On a 2-0 count, he rifled a single up the middle that nearly took out Schmidt's legs.
After the fifth, Ramirez's night was done. His final line for the night read 2-for-2 with a home run, an RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
Ramirez, suspended 50 games for violating the MLB drug policy, is expected to play in the next three games for the Sixers, but manager Carlos Subero said before Saturday's game that plan wasn't absolute.
Subero also said that he expects Ramirez, who DH'd on Saturday, to play in left field Sunday, but he did not specify what his orders were for Monday and Tuesday. |
