Jonathan Broxton had an injection in his right big toe a week ago, and in his first two games back, he allowed as many runs (four) as he had in his previous 30 games.

Nonetheless, manager Joe Torre said he's satisfied his closer is healthy, and Broxton offered up this explanation for the back-to-back whackings administered by the Angels Saturday and Sunday:

    "I'm human," he said.

OK, but he set the bar pretty high in those first 30 appearances, compiling an Eric Gagne-like 1.36 ERA, which has jumped to 2.29 after allowing four runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings over the weekend.

Broxton did take three days off after the cortisone injection, which was prescribed to treat an inflamed nerve at the tip of his right big toe, which provides the push-off from the rubber and bears the brunt of his big frame.

"Everything's under control," Broxton said. "It doesn't hurt me out there. My velocity's good. I gave up a few hits and runs. Everybody gives up runs."

Torre said he felt Broxton pitched better in the ninth inning Sunday than he did getting the final out of the eighth inning or the night before.

"He's a big guy. Timing and rhythm is important to him," Torre said of the time off.

Torre also confirmed that Eric Milton will be activated to start Saturday against Seattle. Reliever Will Ohman will pitch back-to-back Tuesday and Wednesday for Triple-A Albuquerque before being activated, and Jason Schmidt has been activated and will resume his rehab assignment.
