A seventh-inning breakdown by the Dodgers' bullpen and a defensive collapse in the eighth Saturday resulted in a 7-4 loss to the Padres, wasting the first home run by Manny Ramirez since his return and leaving Randy Wolf with another no-decision.
Ramirez homered in the first at-bat of his second game back from a 50-game suspension for violating MLB's Drug Policy, turning on a 1-2 changeup from Padres starter Josh Geer with two outs in the first inning.
The liner into the left-field seats was Manny's seventh home run of the year and No. 534 of his career, moving the slugger into a tie with Jimmie Foxx for 16th on the all-time list. Next is Mickey Mantle at 536.
The Padres tied the game off Wolf in the third inning when Geer doubled and was singled home by David Eckstein. The Dodgers reclaimed the lead with one out in the seventh inning, when reliever Greg Burke's first pitch to Matt Kemp was ruled a wild pitch, allowing Casey Blake to score from third base.
But San Diego went ahead against Ronald Belisario in the bottom of the seventh on Everth Cabrera's two-run single and Adrian Gonzalez's RBI single. The Dodgers cut the lead to a run in the eighth without a ball leaving the infield, but errors by Juan Castro and Casey Blake opened the door to a three-run bottom of the eighth.
Wolf struck out eight without a walk in six innings, but he was handed his 12th no-decision of the year. |
