Best Buy will be the presenting sponsor for a pair of community events hosted by Andre Ethier and James Loney. On Friday, Ethier and Best Buy will host a $4,000 shopping spree for children from the community group A Better L.A. at the West Hollywood Best Buy. Following next Wednesday's game with the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium, Loney will host a video game party as part of his Loney's Lounge initiative for children from Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Los Angeles.
This Friday's event will include inner-city children from the Pete Carroll-founded community group, A Better L.A. Each of the 14 pre-selected kids will receive nearly $300 to spend at the event, which begins at 11:00 a.m. This is the second time Ethier and Best Buy have come together to support children in the Los Angeles community, as the Dodger outfielder hatched the idea last Christmas. On Friday, Ethier will provide $2,500, while Best Buy is chipping in with $1,500.
Last December, Ethier and Best Buy hosted a $4,000 shopping spree for underprivileged children from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services to help spread holiday cheer.
A Better L.A.'s mission is to break the cycle of violence and failure in inner-cities by empowering leaders to change their own communities from within. They unite a diverse group of community partners -- local non-profits, law enforcement, government agencies, and people who grew up with gangs -- to accomplish this goal.
Best Buy - West Hollywood is located at 1015 North La Brea Avenue. Media wishing to attend the event can park in the underground structure on the northwest corner of La Brea Avenue and Romaine Street.
Ethier is batting .267 with a team-best 11 home runs and 43 RBI in 69 games this season.
One week from today, Loney will host 30-40 kids from RBI Los Angeles in the Baseline Box Club along the first base side of the field after the afternoon game with the Rockies. Best Buy will be providing six 46-52 inch flat-screen televisions along with three Xbox 360s and three Wii gaming systems. Best Buy will also be providing 12 video games for the kids to play.
Loney, who is a graduate of the RBI program, last year launched Loney's Lounge with a similar video game party. Loney is hosting children from RBI Los Angeles eight times in 2009. He was the Dodgers' nominee for the 2008 Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.
RBI Los Angeles fosters a love of baseball, gives local kids the opportunity to play in an organized league, and is fully supported by Major League Baseball and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Loney is batting .282 with five homers and team-high 49 RBI in 71 games. |
