Angel Stadium was the site of something rare Saturday night, and we're not just talking about Russell Martin's first home run of the season.
In the Major Leagues' first brother pitching matchup since 2002, Jeff Weaver continued his resurrection season by outpitching little brother Jered as the Dodgers defeated the Angels, 6-4.
Jeff (4-1), reborn as a swingman after his career as a starter faltered, made the spot start and allowed two runs on six hits in five-plus innings, striking out four without a walk. Jered (7-3), done in by a three-run fifth inning that included a two-run triple by Andre Ethier, went 5 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs on 10 hits (three by Martin).
Jeff Weaver gave away the first run to the Angels on a wild pickoff throw that allowed leadoff batter Chone Figgins to go from first to third. He scored on Bobby Abreu's RBI single. Kendry Morales led off the second inning with a home run.
Martin, possibly coming out of a season-long slump, slugged his first home run with one out in the third inning. Matt Kemp walked, was singled to third by Juan Pierre and Rafael Furcal walked to load the bases for Orlando Hudson, whose sacrifice fly tied the score.
The Dodgers took the lead in a three-run fifth on Casey Blake's RBI single and Ethier's two-run triple, then chased Jered Weaver in the sixth when Martin led off with his third hit and eventually scored on reliever Kevin Jepsen's wild pitch. Jeff Weaver was replaced after Figgins' triple leading off the sixth, but Figgins was stranded when Ronald Belisario took over and struck out the side. |
